He was born July 16, 1952 in Kennett, the son of Louis and Maxine Powell. He was a graduate of Kennett High School, where he participated in track and cross country, and was a 1975 graduate of Arkansas State University.
Tom had several jobs throughout his life, including TPowell Trucking and United Steel Workers Local 67 in Granite City, Ill. He also was a teacher and coach in Missouri, Arkansas and Texas, and had worked for the family business, Simpson Tobacco Company. Tom was also a political consultant with John Britton Assoc. for over 20 years.
Although Tom hated to travel, he loved fishing with his young protégé Matt Hill. He also enjoyed boating and was an avid hunter. He was a member of the Jefferson City Country Club, First Presbyterian Church, Ducks Unlimited and the Missouri Farm Bureau.
He is survived his daughter, Brittany Morgan Powell of Jefferson City, whom he loved and adored; a stepdaughter, Kellie Moon Patterson; his mother, Maxine Powell, of Maryville, Ill., and one sister, Patty Rebstock and husband, Don of Maryville, Ill. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Powell, on June 16, 2009.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at the Buck Road Cemetery, located on Hwy. 162 near Maryville, Ill.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Assembly of God Church in Kennett.
