George Fenton Nelson, son of the late Charles Lenzy Nelson and Emma Ethel Spencer Nelson was born July 6, 1922 in Rector, Ark., and departed this life Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 at the age of 87 years and 5 months.

George married Betty Marie Ethridge on Aug. 5, 1944, his wife of 65 years.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marines on Nov. 11, 1942. On Aug. 5, 1944 while on Furlough from overseas duty, he and Betty married. After serving in the South Pacific during WWI on the U.S.S. Battan he returned home and attended barber school in Memphis, Tenn. After graduation he worked two years in Caruthersville, Mo., then moved to Kennett working as a barber for 55 more years. He was a deacon and song leader at Ely Baptist Church where he lead many souls to Christ. He was a member of the American Legion. He has been a huge influence on so many lives. He was a very caring and compassionate person always willing to give a helping hand.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Nelson, of Kennett; one son, Dennis Nelson and his wife, Tracey, of Kennett; two daughters, Charlotte Marshall and her husband, Donald, of Kennett and Jerris Raines of Paragould, Ark.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends.

George was preceded in death by two brothers, Ted and Christopher Nelson; two sisters: Ruby Merrell and Cleo Merrell and a granddaughter, Tiffany Raines McFarland.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., today, Tuesday, Dec. 8, at McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Kennett with Revs. Bud Evans and Dale Rickman officiating.

Burial was in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Kennett.
