Alphonsus ""Al" Deken, 70, of Rockwood, Ill., died at 7:10 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at home.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1939 in Qulin, Mo., to Charles Albert and Theresia Johanna Peters Deken. He married Nancy Weatherholt on Sept. 2, 1961. She survives him.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester, Ill. He served his country honorably in the U. S. Air Force for 4 years.

He is survived by his wife Nancy of Rockwood; three daughters, Marie Deken, of Rockwood, Susan (Mike) Gross, of O'Fallon, Ill., and Donna (John) Chavez, of St. Joseph, Mo.; two sons, Louis Deken, of Haleyville, Ala., and Glenn Deken, of Rockwood; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Jessica, Johnny, Matthew, Richard, Cody, Cassandra and Ashley; two brothers, Clemens Deken, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Hyacinth Deken, of Kennett; four sisters, Charlotta Ubelhor, of Glennonville, Mo., Evaline Byrd, of Phoenix, Ariz., Regina Carver, of Golden Eagle, Ill., and Theresia Hefner, of Poplar Blulff, and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George, Sylvester and Evaristus; three brothers-in-law, Robert Weatherholt, Louis Smith and Leonard Ubelhor and one sister-in-law, Christine Deken.

A gathering conducted by the family will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 at Knights of Columbus Hall in Chester. Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., a celebration of life will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Gene Wojcik officiating. Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at St. Theresia Parish in Glennonville.

Burial will be in St. Theresia Cemetery at Glennonville.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Cremation was handled by Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home.
