A newcomer's interest

Sunday, November 8, 2009
To the Editor:

I am a relative newcomer to Kennet as well as Missouri. I take an active interest as to what is going on in our community as well as in issues at the state and national level that concern me. However, I have noticed that many of the people holding elected offices do not seem to care much about communicating with their constituents although I am sure they appreciate their votes. In the past six months I have written or e-mailed Senator McCaskill five times and received two replies. I have written Congresswoman Emerson twice and received no replies and I have written State Representative Tom Todd once and got no reply. I think that voters should expect at least some sort of response when they write to their elected officials at any level. In that regard I can say that on every occasion all my communications to Mayor Wheeler of Kennett have been promptly answered. It appears that the higher politicians go in office the less they seem to care about the input, suggestions, queries and opinions of their constituents.

I suggest that all those readers of this newspaper, who are concerned about any matter before the public, write a letter or send an e-mail to their elected representatives at every level. I wonder how many of the letter writers will be disappointed to learn that many of the people elected to represent them just don't seem to care.
