Oscar Paul Barnes, of Kennett, son of the late Edward R. Barnes and Versa Gooble Barnes and step-father, Silas Morris, was born Nov. 13, 1925, in Kennett and departed this life at National HealthCare in Kennett on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and three days.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired assistant fire chief of the Kennett Fire Department.

Oscar married Janie Ruth Essary on Dec. 9, 1943 in Martin, Tenn. Janie Ruth preceded Oscar in death on July 5, 2005. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Melson, Dearll, Gary Don and Michael Morris and two sisters, Jackie Stone and Shirley Barker.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Paul Barnes and wife, Stella, of Luxora, Ark., and Tommy Joe Barnes and wife, Sharon, of Springfield, Mo.; four daughters, Bonnie Sue Barnes, of Kennett, Betty Ruth Low and husband, Raymond, of Gallion, Ala., Connie Mae Rhew and husband, Jay, of Kennett, and Carlene Kay Horton and husband, David, of Kennett; 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; one brother, Van Morris; four sisters, Peggy Baumann and husband, Roger, of Marmaduke, Ark.; Carol Hicks, of Kennett, Sharon Belcher and husband, Delmer, of Holcomb, Mo., and Glenda Williams and husband, Bill, of Mounds, Ill.; special friend, Rose Williams, of Kennett, and many nephews and nieces and many friends.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, at McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett with service being held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21, at McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Luther officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Kennett.

Kennett Fire Department will service as pallbearers.
