Following last month's resignation of Russ Fullerton, district athletic director, and a lengthy discussion at the meeting on Tuesday, the Kennett Board of Education voted to accept the establishment of three new positions to fill the gap left by the former director.
In an effort to save the district $40,000 per year, Superintendent Jerry Noble suggested that Fullerton's position be absorbed, with his responsibilities being distributed between three newly established positions -- assistant to the high school principal, assistant to the middle school principal, and athletic director -- to be filled from within the district.
The duties of the assistant to the principal positions include doing all clerical work as the previous athletic director conducted, such as games and scheduling. The new athletic director will be over the entire program, according to Noble.
The new assistants to the principals will be part-time teaching positions and part-time office worker positions.
Board member Linda Kelly expressed concern over the new position, saying that she felt the positions should be added to the Extra Duty list and paid via stipends, as opposed to a salary increase. The salary increase would be an extra $3,500 per year, added to the individual's base salary.
After several minutes of debate, board member Matthew Poole made the motion that the positions be approved and paid via a salary increase, with the amendment that the positions will be up for review with the administrative positions in February.
The board approved the positions, in opposition of Kelly's vote of "no," where she stated, again, that she feels the positions should be paid via stipends.
Also during the meeting, KHS student Mary Christensen addressed the board regarding the school soccer program.
In her address, Christensen presented a petition to the board with more than 60 signatures. The petition was student who intended to play soccer during the next school year, provided that the board hires an experienced soccer coach.
Christensen said she speaks for the students on the petition, noting that they feel the board does not care as much about the soccer program as it does about other sport programs.
Christensen said that she, and the other students involved, want a soccer coach who has experience.
She also said she thinks the coaches who have worked with the program are "amazing coaches" and that she is "proud of them" for what they have attempted to do with the program.
Christensen went on to say that soccer is one of the most renowned sports in the world, even more so than football. She said not only is it a sport that the students play, but it is a sport that keeps families together.
In closing, Christensen said that she loves soccer and does not want to see the program die, adding that it is not just the parents who want to see the program continue, but the students as well.
The board thanked Christensen for her time, adding that it was a good presentation.
Following Christensen's presentation, the board heard an update on the school renovations by Assistant Superintendent Chris Wilson.
Wilson said the renovation at the high school is almost complete, with only a few minor issues left to finalize.
Noble said he would like to set up a time to host an open house for the taxpayers to come in and see what their money has done for the district. An official date was not set.
In other matters, the board:
* Approved the various board reports;
* Authorized Wilson to solicit bids on an "as needed" basis for fuel for transportation vehicles and to award bids for fuel orders to the lowest bidder;
* Authorized the publication of the District Financial Report, following the completion of the annual school audit;
* Approved the submission of various, required end of the year program reports to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education;
* Adopted the present budget as the beginning budget for the 2009-2010 school year. The budget will be amended when salaries and other expenditures are finalized;
* Approved allowing Noble and the district auditor to review the final budget figures and allow for any budget revisions and transfers as needed;
* Authorized Noble as the authorized representative to apply for federal programs and grants;
* Approved increasing the current salary for district treasurer from $14.97 to $15.47 per hour, due to the increase in the work load with the recent implementation of the Health Savings Accounts and Flex Spending Accounts;
* Approved the Gifted, Technology, School Climate, Instructional Effectiveness, Community Education, Title ILA, Title IV, Title V, and Title VLB Program evaluations;
* Approved amendments to Title I and Building/Capital Projects budgets, as presented by Cindy Carroll;
* Approved amendments to the 2008-2009 Reading First budget, as presented by Laurie McAtee;
* Approved amendments to the 2008-2009 Health Services budget, as presented by Deb Cook;
* Approved a new position of Kennett Middle School MAP Facilitator for the 2009-2010 school year, which will be paid from stimulus funding and may only be a two year term, and;
* Approved a position, School-Home Liasion/Social Worker, to be funded through IDEA ARRA funds, with the possibility of employment for two years.
The board closed the meeting by adjourning to executive session. The executive session information was not available at press time.

As many of us know soccer is now the #1 sport in America. I think if you have a program that 60 people sign to be in favor of the board should do everything possible to support it. The student is right it is a sport that keeps families together because siblings of all age groups can play at their levels and parents get more involved because all children in a family usualy do play
Sorry Oliver, it is not the number one sport in this country, this is the United States. Most people do not care about it. Sure, lots of little sissy boys play it because their momma's want them to and everyone can play and it is easy to learn the rules.
But when you really get down to it, it is a foreign sport that has not place in this country. It is just a symptom of this becoming a foreign country and losing the traditions of the United States. When our President finishes what he has started, turning us into France, it may be the favorite sport.
Hey,Gobler, shame on you! I think you have it wrong; it takes a real athlete to sustain 90 minutes of rigorous running, attacking, defending, and using ones mind to create plays while in the throws of play. Soccer is not a place for sissies...we'll save that name tag for the ones who are scared of the sport and want to sit around and whine about it.
I bet our country's national soccer team would be really disappointed in your comments. Did you know that they just beat the number one team in the world? No one expected them to win, after all, they were playing a team that won the World Cup taking only one goal against them, and have not lost in 35 games. The United States National Soccer team stepped on the field and played like true champions. They played awesome, and I am proud of them. Oh, by the way, I didn't see any sissies on the field! I saw athletes, winners, warriors!
Go Soccer!
I only pull against the United States for one thing....soccer. I hoped those bunch of sissies would lose to the bunch of sissies from Spain.
I watched a soccer game once. It is a myth that soccer players have to run and the game is rigorous. One or two players run and play hard for a few seconds while the others stand around and watch. Then a couple of others will play and the rest will watch.
Dumb communist sport.
I don't think you were watching soccer. In soccer every player is an important part of the team. It takes quick thinking and fast legs, and a lot of stamina.
Soccer is not for sissies. You need to try and play a game of soccer, see if you can do it, then you can determine if it's for sissies.
I watched the US and Brazil game....boring....and way too much standing around. At the least bit of contact, they flail around and fall down like they have been shot.
Sissies.....and it is worse when you have these little boys out there playing and their momma's are the one's running the show......a symptom of the destuction of good old American values.
Why are you so bitter? Soccer is a sport, a sport. Not a religion, not a political group, but a sport. Why are you scared of soccer?
You know, some people think within a little box, but hopefully, most people know how to think beyond that box, learn new things, experience moments outside their 'comfort' level, even read a new book. I feel real sorry for people who are not comfortable doing these things. It's these people who are able to get beyond that little box who really know what good American values are.
Light up.
Me bitter? You need to look back at your first post. You attacked me. I still have not attacked you. I am just stating my opinion. I know soccer is just a "sport"....though I could argue that it is not real sport.
You are missing the point. Soccer is a sympton of a greater problem. The destruction of America as we used to know it. The fact that families are not longer a Dad, Mom, and kids...as well as a large extended family with strong men in the family....all of the illegals in the country....the new type of immigrant who is more loyal to their native country....signified by the hyphenated American names....we are raising sissy boys influenced by mom's because Dad's are either wimps or absent.
I do not want my taxes to support a foreign sport made up of sissy boys running around with shin guards and stupid looking socks.
Soccer is a symptom of a greater problem. The destruction of America as we used to know it.?????
What?! Are you serious? That has got to be one of the lamest excused for someone not wanting a soccer program. I mean, how in the world can you say that?
How long do you think soccer has been played here in the united states? The first U.S. match known to have been inspired by FA rules was a game between Princeton University and Rutgers University on November 6, 1869. Hey, that's American, way before your time.
You know, some people like to point fingers and blame others for our problems, but nothing will ever get better if we don't start with ourselves first. Some people have trouble accepting 'other' people, 'other' sports, 'other' ways of living, and they want to blame everything on these 'others', but we need to look at ourselves first.
My family is a strong family, strong mother, strong father, strong kids, and yes, soccer. Both my husband I came from families with strong mothers and strong fathers.
Shame on you for not acknowledging the fact that not everyone is the same. Some kids play basketball, some play volleyball, some play tennis, golf, football, baseball, softball, (and the list goes on), and some play soccer. I don't think any kid who plays any of these sports are sissies, wimps, or cowards (or whatever else you can find to describe a kid who likes to play a sport that maybe you don't like). I think they are great. With the problems of childhood obesity on the rise, kids should be encouraged and supported when they choose to play a sport, even if that sport happens to be the great sport of soccer. Not called names and put down.
Shame on you, because what you are doing, calling these kids names, is disgraceful. Remember the American Values you spoke of? I don't think putting kids down and calling them names one of them.
How long has it been played in small towns in the midwest and south? Not long....because we used to not raise a bunch of wimps.
I bet your husband wears his sweater tied around his neck and wears loafers with shorts.
I vote against all tax increases for schools as long as soccer is part of the district.
Whatever. My husband never wears anything that closely resembles anything that you probably wear.
I think that you are just closed minded.
There's no talking to people who refuse to listen and keep making excuses. You can't see clearly if you refuse to open your eyes. I feel real sorry for you.
Nice talking to you. I thought that we had gotten through the dark ages, but it's clear, by talking to you, that we haven't.
Have a good life in your little box.
I am sure we do not dress alike. I refuse to tie sweaters around my shoulders and I am not going to wear loafers with my docker shorts.
Go on and take your boys to soccer practice. Get mad at the coach if they all do not get to play as much as the neighbors little boys. Afterall, this is soccer, everyone plays and everyone wins and no one is to get bumped or bruised.
Just what we need, a bunch of little Biff's running around in shorts and knee high coloered socks.
Hey, Gobler, why do you hate something that you apparently don't understand at all. And if you are talking about strong families then your parents still have some teaching for you in tact and manners because my mother taught me to not say anything if I can't say anything nice.
And guess what, I played soccer in my youth. Just playing a sport what you think is for "sissies" doesn't make someone that it just makes you more ignorant, and closed minded. And from your statements you sound extremely racist also.
