According to Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Stephen Sokoloff and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jonce Chidister, a Dunklin County jury has convicted Christopher Wilburn, of Kennett, of the two charges in the October 20, 2008 beating of Brock Hopper, 32, also of Kennett.
Sokoloff charged Wilburn, 33, with knowingly causing serious physical injury to Hopper and using a dangerous instrument to commit the felony assault, which left Hopper with noticeable scarring and memory loss.
Sokoloff, assisted by Chidister, presented the state's evidence at the trial, which was held before the Honorable Stephen R. Sharp, 35th Circuit Judge, on May 29.
"This was a serious assault, and we are pleased that the jury came back with what we felt was the right decision," Sokoloff said.
Sentencing is set for Wednesday, July 8, 2009, before Judge Sharp. According to Sokoloff, the assault in the first degree charge carries a sentence of 10 to 30 years, or life imprisonment. The armed criminal action charge carries a sentence of not less than three years.
