Number of officials running unopposed

Thursday, April 2, 2009
Several of the Kennett, Hornersville, Arbyrd, and Cardwell city officials are running unopposed in the upcoming April elections.

Trena Leach, currently city collector of Kennett, is unopposed in her campaign for re-election on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Leach has been working as the city collector for six years and will be running for a new two-year-term. Prior to being elected as city collector, Leach worked for McDaniel Funeral Service for 12 years as a bookkeeper and before that she worked with special education children for five years.

"I love the position and enjoy working with the public," Leach said. "I feel like it is my responsibility to help people and that is the part I like the most."

Current Ward II incumbent, Larry McDowell, is running unopposed for his seat in the Kennett City Council. McDowell has been an Alderman in Kennett for the last four years, which he sees as an opportunity to give back to the city.

"Kennett has been good to my family and the position I hold helps me return the favor to the city," McDowell said. "Another thing I enjoy is meeting all of the good people of Kennett through the position."

Patsy Davis, current Senath, Mo., South Ward Alderman, will be running unopposed in her campaign to be re-elected for a fifth term on the city council. Davis worked for 31 plus years as a supervisor in labor and delivery at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She returned to Senath in 1996, and upon her return, served two years on the Park Board with Raynell Ivy. Davis has been on the city council for a total of eight years.

"I like being a part of the council because of the knowledge of the community efforts and ability to help people when they call asking for help," Davis said. "Helping has always been a part of my life, and I have been doing it my whole life as a nurse."

The other current Senath South Ward Alderman is running unopposed for a one-year-term. John Holmes will be seeking election to a one-year term to the Senath City Council. Holmes served in the military air force for eight years as a command post controller in emergency actions before returning home to Senath four years ago. Holmes was appointed to the South Ward Alderman seat by the Senath City Council in August after Junior Jaco resigned from the seat.

"I basically want to serve to have the opportunity to help the community and improve situations," Holmes said. "Since August, I have been working as community relations between the Police Department and the community and insured the department has all the necessary equipment."

In Cardwell, Mo., Jack Sparks is unopposed for his current seat of South Ward Alderman and Wanda Lee is unopposed for her current seat of North Ward Alderman. Sparks has been an Alderman for the last two years, and is a retired veteran from the Air Force. He is also a 32-year resident of Cardwell, Mo. Lee has served four years as an Alderman, and served as Mayor Pro Term for six months before Mayor John Prince was elected. Before she was an alderman, Lee served 9 years on the Southland C-9 School Board.
