The Annual Garrett Short Car and Bike Show recently held its T-shirt design contest to kick start activities for the 2009 incarnation of this community event.
In previous years, the T-shirt contest has been open to only Kennett High School students. For this year's contest, students from Kennett, Senath, Holcomb, and Delta C-7 were allowed to enter hand-drawn and computer generated designs.
More than 50 designs were submitted. Out of those 50, a committee of Short's classmates and their families narrowed the entries to their eight favorite designs and voted for this year's winner, Andrew Cook, a senior at Holcomb High School.
Cook's design will be featured on the 4th annual Garrett Short Car and Bike Show T-shirt, which can be purchased for $10 each beginning April 1.
Garrett Short, son of Jack William and Kimberly Jo Peterson Short, was a 13-year-old seventh-grade student at Kennett Middle School who lost his life in a tragic automobile accident in July 2005.
Shortly after his accident, Short's classmates and their families began organizing the car and bike show as a way to fund the Garrett Short Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund.
The first show was held in 2006, and since that time, Short's classmates, the class of 2011, have raised almost $40,000 for the scholarship fund.
Each year, two graduating Kennett High School seniors who participated in athletics are chosen to receive scholarships. The scholarships will continue through the year 2011.
This year's show will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the American Legion Building in Kennett with registration beginning at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $20 and classes for every make or model will be available.
Trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third place, as well as best of show. A plaque will be awarded for farthest traveled and the viewer's choice winner will receive paid entry into next year's show.
New this year will be a "Cruise Through Downtown" drive, which will immediately follow the announcement of the winners.
Live entertainment will be held throughout the day with demonstrations from the American Tae Kwon Do Association, the Tumbling Tribe, the Kennett School of Performing Arts, Miss Leah Jo's twirlers, and local bands including 'Grace Proven,' of Steele, Mo.
The silent auction will be held again this year with tables closing every 30 minutes beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Also new this year will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament organized by Coach Jim Vaughan. Entry fees for the tournament are $30 per team. For more information on the tournament, contact Jim Vaughan at coach_von@hotmail.com
Entry forms for the car and bike show are available by contacting event coordinator Kathy Rogers at (573) 344-0187, or indianfan87@hotmail.com.
