Hartsill R. Burchfield, 78, of Lenexa, Kan., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Hart was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Wooster, Ark., son of John Lee and Edna Wofford, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951, and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1980. He then worked as an independent insurance agent for 18 years, retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Lenexa Baptist Church, where he sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school classes. He was also a member of the Military Officers Association of America, Sunflower Chapter.

Hart is survived by his wife of 53 years, Grace McCoy Burchfield, of the home; one son, Raymond Burchfield and wife, Donna, of Shawnee, Kan.; one daughter, Margaret Wessel and husband, Greg, of Vashon, Wash.; four brothers, Rudolph Burchfield, of St. Louis, Mo., Wendell Burchfield and wife, Melba, of St. Charles, Mo., James Burchfield and wife, Martha, of Sikeston, Mo., and Harold Burchfield and wife, Mona, of Corpus Christi, Texas; three sisters, Fayrene Cunningham and husband, Henry, of Wellington, Fla., Wanda Dye and husband, Charles B., of Blytheville, Ark., and Patsy Oswalt and husband, J.L., of Bragg City, Mo., and five grandchildren, Brian Burchfield and wife, Libby, of Durham, N.C., David Burchfield, of Kansas City, Mo., Eric Olson, Stephen Trudel and Marie Trudell, all of Vashon, Wash.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Milburn Owen, Vernon Lee, Garland Conlon and Billy Joe Burchfield, and three sisters, Una Mae Rhodes, Maxine Sweat and Elizabeth Burchfield.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Lenexa Baptist Church in Lenexa , Kan., with his pastor, his son, Raymond Burchfield and his brother-in-law, Jesse Thomas officiating.

Burial with military honors was in the National Cemetery at Leavenworth, Kan.

Porter Funeral Home of Lenexa, Kan. was in charge of arrangements.
