James McLarty

James Elra McLarty was born Nov. 17, 1929, and died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the age of 79 at his home in Hornersville, Mo. Mr. McLarty was a retired Memphis City School teacher, and active member of the Hornersville First American Legion Post #362, the Farmers & Merchants Club and served in many capacities at the Hornersville First United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing while in the company of good friends. He also had a special interest in Ole Miss football, attending as many home games as possible, which not only enabled him to enjoy the sport, but the company of his nephews. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Mr. McLarty is survived by his wife, Penny Droke McLarty; a daughter, Angela and her husband, Michael Goldberg, of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, James and his fiancé, Angel McMichael, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a grandson, Nathan McLarty, of Colorado; a sister, Kate Rodgers, of Oxford, Miss.; a godson, Jason Droke and a host of other loving family and friends.

Mr. McLarty was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Beulah Stephens and seven siblings, Edna, Joseph, Mary Sue, John Henry, Juanita, W.E. (Bo) and Carlene.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Methodist Church in Hornersville with Rev. Jim Pemberton officiating.

Burial was in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Kennett.

Pallbearers were Andy, Brad and Skyler Droke, Brian McLarty, Shane McLarty and Shawn Bennett.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church General Fund in Hornersville, Mo.

McDaniel Funeral Home of Kennett was in charge of arrangements.
