Born Oct. 20, 1926, in Hayti, Mo., son of the late Harry and Mamie Metzger Gurlen, Sr., he was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict and WWII. He was employed at Kennett Public School in the maintenance department and as a bus driver.
On Aug. 8, 1946, he married Goldie Howren, who preceded him in death on June 25, 1999. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Rhytha Whitaker.
Survivors include two sons, Sonny Gurlen, of Jacksonville, Ark., and Wayne Gurlen, of Little Rock, Ark.; three daughters, Nancy Hardin and Margaret Bowling, both of Kennett and Janet Thompson, of Jacksonville; Special friend, Sharon Raspberry; six grandchildren, Angela Hogan, Greg Bowling, Shane Gurlen, Samantha Hardin and Mike and Chris Thompson, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., today, Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Kennett.
Burial was in the Oak Ridge Cemetery at Kennett.
Pallbearers were Shane Gurlen, Greg and Tyler Bowling, Anthony Hogan and Mike and Chris Thompson.
