Essie Lena Works, 93, of Steele, Mo., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

Born Jan. 29, 1915, in Itawamba County, Mississippi, daughter of the late Charley and Ollie Cockrell Walton, she was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Steele.

On Aug. 18, 1935, in Mantachie, Miss., she married Morton Seldon Works, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Kay Works; four brothers, Jessie, Willie, Cecil and Noonan Walton; two half-brothers, Windle and Howard Walton and one half-sister, Lola Walton.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Pelts and husband, Joe, of Kennett and Lanice Samford and husband, Keith, of Steele; two sisters, Gena Devall, of Mantachie, Miss., and Margaret Thrasher, of Mariette, Miss.; four grandchildren, Marc Hoskins, of Kennett, Marcy Tybur, of Woodlands, Texas and Leslie and Lena Samford, both of Steele and four great-grandchildren, Evan Hoskins, of Munich, Germany, Elaine Hoskins, of Kennett and Jonathan and Spencer Tybur, of Woodlands, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., today, Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel in Steele with Rev. Michael Funderburk officiating.

Burial was in the Pemiscot Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Caruthersville, Mo.
