All Proceeds will be donated to Carolyn Caraway for expenses relating to her illness.
The above mentioned barbecue and auction benefits are being held for Caraway, 34, who has been battling cancer since the year 2000.
According to Caraway, she was diagnosed with Endometrial Stromal Carcinoma at which time she was required to have a partial hystorectomy.
Then the cancer returned two and one-half years later. This time another surgery was required, thinking this would get rid of the cancer, the doctors did a complete hystorectomy, and began Caraway on chemo pills for two years. While on the chemo pills, in 2002 the cancer returned. In 2004, the cancer began affecting her left side, the sciatic nerve and her left kidney. The cancer had engulfed her left kidney and was growing into the bladder, and had also engulfed the abdominal aorta. This time surgeons removed her left kidney and a section of the bladder. According to Caraway, the doctors told her the cancer looked like an octopus and when they removed the kidney and part of the bladder the cancer tenticles detatched themselves from the aorta.
Now in 2008, Caraway received the news again, that the cancer was back.
"The doctors tell me I now have four tumors, one in my lower back, one in my abdomen, one in my left leg and one that has engulfed my left pelvis. I have been taking chemotherapy treatments all summer," Caraway said. "Even with all the chemo treatments the doctors tell me that none of the tumors have shrunk any in size."
"I am going to St. Louis on Oct. 6, for an experimental treatment. The doctors tell me only 15 people nationwide, including myself, will be receiving this treatment at the Washington University," Caraway added.
