James Edward Harper, 74, of Sikeston, Mo., formerly of Pemiscot County, Mo., died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at the Hunter Acres Caring Center in Sikeston.
Born Oct. 15, 1933, in Bragg City, Mo., son of the late Rev. Will Odes Harper, Sr., and Anna Bell Maxwell Harper, he attended school in Deering, Mo., Braggadocio, Mo., and Hayti, Mo. He was a sharecropper and also worked in the apple harvest and fruit harvest.
Survivors include one son, Richard Harper, of Hayti; four sisters, Martha A. Harper, of Hayti, Odie Bell Harper Thomas, of St. Louis, Mo., and Jeannie Harper Longwith and Flora Harper, both of Springfield, Mo., and four brothers, Joel Lee Harper, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Johnny Harper and wife, Pat, of Killeen, Texas, Freddie L. Harper and wife, Lovie, of Kansas City, Mo., Roger L. Harper, of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sadie Lee Harper Moore and Ester Doris Harper and one brother, Will Odes Harper, Jr.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 22, at the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Hayti with Elder Percy Cannon officiating.
Burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery north of Hayti.
Pallbearers were family and friends.
