A fire destroyed a vacant structure at 603 West Ninth Street, leaving officials suspecting arson.

The Kennett Fire Department received a call at 12:45 a.m. regarding the incident, and remained on the scene until 5:15 a.m..

"When the fire department arrived there was heavy smoke and flames erupting from the structure," Fire Marshall Scott Tutor said

"At this point the fire is under investigation by the Kennett Fire and Police Departments and the Missouri State Fire Marshall. The fire is suspicious in nature, since there was no electrical service to the structure."

The house is owned by Joel Hancock and Debbie Cossey and was destroyed by the fire.

The house adjacent to the fire, owned by Richard Jenkins and occupied by Tracey Causey and family, received damage to the vinyl siding due to the extreme heat from the fire.

"We were asleep and woke up to a responder knocking at the door and we were scared," Causey said following the incident.

To report arson call the Missouri Arson Hotline 1-800-39-ARSON. There is a $5000 Reward Fund for information leading to an arrest involving arson.

Is this a news story or an editoral? Can't tell by the "headline." Too "cute" by far.

Poor - - should I say very poor - - journalism. Schools out? Maybe school should be "in."

Thanks for your suggestions here. Feedback is good whether it is supportive and in favor of, or, suggestive criticism.

Give the gal a break! Not only is she relatively new to her position, she (like everyone else) is not perfect. We all make mistakes and I trust Deanna has taken the criticism to heart and has learned from this one. Besides, deadlines can be brutal when it comes to getting everything just right.

At least she wrote what was really on her mind.
