Gambling granny goes to jail

Tuesday, August 26, 2008
CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- Caruthersville police officers arrested a 56-year-old grandmother on charges of child endangerment over the weekend.

According to the report filed by the Caruthersville Police Department (CPD), at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, officers responded to the Lady Luck Casino in reference to a missing vehicle and missing juveniles.

Upon arrival, officers spoke to Glennia L. Roberts, of Rock Port, Texas, who stated she had left her 16-year-old and 7-year-old grand daughters in the vehicle while she went into the casino to gamble. When she returned to the parking lot, she could not locate her vehicle or the children.

CPD officers, with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, conducted an investigation into the incident and it was later determined that the 16-year-old was actually only 13-years-old.

Officers subsequently arrested Roberts on charges of child endangerment and she is being held at the Pemiscot County Jail with no bond.

Officers later located the vehicle and the children in England Park, after the vehicle the 13-year-old had been driving ran out of gas.

The children have been placed into the custody of the Division of Family Services until they can be placed with a family member in Texas.
