According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, work is expected to get underway to install traffic signals at Route 25/Russell Street next Monday, Aug. 25, weather permitting.
Representatives with MoDot say that during the construction of the project, Route 25 will be reduced from four lanes of traffic to two.
MoDot has also indicated that the reduced locations will vary as construction progresses, but one lane will be open in each direction while the improvements are made.
Russell Street will be closed at the intersection on both sides of Route 25 for approximately one month.
While many residents in the city of Kennett have been convinced for some time that a signal light should be installed at this location, it took the Regional Planning Commission's encouragement and support to intiate the project, due to evident accident statistics throughout the area, like one crash that recently occured on Tuesday afternoon at the corner of Independence and Harris Street.
As a result of in-depth traffic studies and community support, in April 2008, The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission awarded a contract during a regular meeting at Sikeston for the installation of traffic signals at Kennett.
The $304,622 contract was awarded to the Penzel Construction Company of Jackson, Mo.
During the construction phase of the project, drivers are urged to demostrate extreme caution in work zone areas. Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
