Esmal Mae "Essie" Dawson, 85, of Hayti, Mo., died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Hayti.

Born April 7, 1923, in Pemiscot County, Mo., daughter of the late Richard Z. and Bertha Mae Alexander, she was retired from Arkansas Missouri Power Company and a member of the Hayti First Baptist Church.

On Dec. 24, 1942, in Springfield, Mo., she married Edsel Dawson, who preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 2007. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Richard Alexander and three sisters, Thelma Hodges, Mable Reifsnyder and Opal McCloskey.

Survivors include one son, Mark Dawson and wife, Robin, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; one sister, Laura and husband, Willard, of Salisbury, Md.; a sister-in-law, Almeda Alexander, of Hayti; a brother-in-law, John Hodges, of Amarillo, Texas and two grandsons, Craig and Ben, of Lee's Summit.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 23, at the First Baptist Church in Hayti with the Rev. Coy Camp officiating.

Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Hayti.

Pallbearers were Bob Turnage, Allen Taylor, Dub Pate, Phil Bowen, Todd Nettleton and Jim Brent.

John W. German Funeral Home of Hayti was in charge of arrangements.
