Following an automobile accident between Joiner, Ark. and Interstate Highway 55 on Saturday, July 5, 2008, Buhler was hospitalized in the Memphis Med suffering from a broken wrist, cracked tailbone, and was bruised and swollen on various parts of his body. His vehicle was totaled and unfortunately his camera equipment is presumed lost.
After hearing about the accident, many people in the community took it upon themselves to help raise money for Mike in his time of need.
On Wednesday, July 14, 2008, Charley and Charolyn Hillburn, along with their children Bud and Hadley, opened a lemonade stand in front of Baker Farm and Hardware in Kennett. After just a few hours, they had raised nearly $400 for Buhler.
Donations were also accepted at the Kennett Swim Team meet on Saturday, July 19.
Susan Luce at the Dunklin County Court House, Kim Hughes at the Dunklin County Health Center, and Angela Branum at Sam William's Law Office are also accepting donations on Buhler's behalf.
On July 10, Buhler was released from the Med but was readmitted to the Poplar Bluff hospital later that evening.
Buhler has been in rehab for just over one week and is doing better. He had a minor surgery on Friday, July 18, in which an external fixator was placed on his wrist.
According to Buhler, he is supposed to be released from the hospital on Tuesday, July 22, but will remain out of work for a few more weeks.
When asked what he thought about everything the community has been doing, Buhler responded, "I appreciate it, it means so much."

Michael,
I do hope things are going well for you at this time. I know you are a tough guy, but take it easy as you gain strength with rehab.
You are a very special person to me. It doesn't seem like all of the years should have passed so quickly. I knew as your teacher, you had so many ways to complete your life.
I am very impressed with all of the people who are so willing to help you. I also plan to send in a donation for you to get your camera up and running. It is almost time for the Indians to take the field !!!!!!!!!
Best Wishes to you, Michael.

Glad to hear that Mike Buhler is doing better. An injury to the "tailbone" might sound trivial, but the tailbone (coccyx)is made up of the lower four vertebrae of the spine, a dangerous place for injury. We wish him a speedy recovery, and an early return to his great sports writing.
