SENATH, Mo. -- School improvements, increased lunch fees, no cell phones, and a new counselor were the major topics of the Senath School Board meeting on Thursday.

After the approval of previous minutes and bills, Superintendent Larry Wood gave his report on the happenings at Senath-Hornersville Schools this summer. According to Wood's report, the elementary school has received new tile in the cafeteria and will have a new roof by August 1.

The middle school library has received a new paint job, new lighting, and has been remodeled. The middle school gymnasium floor was refinished and has had the school mascot painted at center court.

The high school gymnasium floor was also refinished.

Wood assured the board that everything will be ready to go by August 1.

Following the superintendent's report, the board moved on to new business.

After much debate, the Senath School Board voted unanimously to raise the price of school lunches by 25 cents, up to $1.25 for students and $1.75 for adults. The decision came about as a means to cut down on the loss the school suffered on last year's food costs.

Another main item on the agenda was the new cell phone policy. Beginning this school year, no cellular phones will be allowed on the campus. With the advent of new technologies on the phones such as cameras and video recorders, the state of Missouri suggested this new policy to try to avoid unwanted photos and videos from appearing on the Internet.

The board voted unanimously to accept this policy after an unwanted summer school video appeared on a popular video website.

During the executive session, the board decided to hire a new elementary school counselor. Tiffany Jackson, of Senath, received this new position.

Other topics on the agenda saw the tuition rate and substitute pay stay the same as the previous year at $4,800 per year and $65 to $75 per day respectively.

We survived before cell phones...it will work. Cell phones can be useful in an emergency at school....unfortunately....they are abused and they are a real nuisance or worse.

Schools most likely have no choice. There is going to be a lawsuit one of these days and the school not prohibiting them is going to be found negligent.

Teachers will do what they are told to do....and they will adjust. Looks like messages will just be called into the office. Secretaries will be busier.

Good call by the Board.

I attend school there, I take my cell phone to school everyday, it remains off or on silent... Regarding that video, I didn't find it. I've seen quite a few teachers use there phones in class and out of class. They also have a phone in the class room, there not supposed to be used while class is in session, I know some teachers that use them all the time. This just isn't going to work.

Students should not use their phones while on campus. They can be quite a distraction during class. However, when they are away on trips and traveling on the buses for games parents want a way to stay in touch with their children.

IF you really need to call someone, the school office has phones. I went to school there before cell phones were popular and it didn't bother any of us.

The teachers are not going to like having to leave thier cell phones in the car. This is not going to work.
