Administration reports summer school program going well at SHHS

Friday, June 20, 2008

The administration at Senath-Hornersville Schools reported in its monthly meeting that the summer school program was going exceptionally well.

On Tuesday, Elementary Principal Cynthia Keating told the school board that summer school was going really good and there had been a positive response in student attendance.

212 children enrolled in the summer program, according to Keating.

Those students enrolled will visit the Bluff Falls Waterpark at Poplar Bluff on the last scheduled day, Friday, June 27, to celebrate their participation and success in the summer academic program.

At the middle school, Principal Chad Morgan said 232 students were enrolled as of the end of the regular academic year.

Morgan said the average daily attendance (ADA) percentage total came in at 93.7 percent.

High School principal Kim Campbell said 220 students were enrolled at his campus, achieving 91 percent average daily attendance.

Other news from the high school included an announcement that the school had received the new furniture it ordered for the library/media center.

In past months, the library has received what most referred to as a much needed facelift that included organization, new carpeting, and blinds.

Now the look will be complete with the addition of new furniture that includes tables and chairs.

Other campus improvements at the high school include exterior painting around some of the windows, with new blinds for all of the windows, coming-soon.

The elementary school will also soon receive new blinds for the windows that need them, as approved by the board.

At the middle school, upcoming improvements will include the installation of new carpet in the student library.

On Tuesday, the board approved a bid received from Butlers in Kennett to provide the carpet and install it at a cost of $2,862.61.

Butlers will also be providing the blinds at the elementary at a cost of $4,759.68.

District-wide, Senath-Hornersville also improved its parking lots by having a company called Rocky Top seal the asphalt at all three campuses for a cost to the district of $13,551.

Other expenses paid out by the district and approved by the board included membership dues of $4,100 to Missouri School Board Association (MSBA), and the addition of $6,400 to an original bid submitted in a previous meeting by Quality Roofing of Senath to take out the skylights in the elementary roof, as a part of the new proposed roofing project.

According to the school, if the skylights are not removed, even after the new roof is installed, there may still be problems with leaking.

In executive session, the board accepted the resignations of two first grade teachers, Marcie Brewer and Mandy Hall.

The Senath-Hornersville Board of Education met on Tuesday to hold its regular monthly meeting, which was re-scheduled from Thursday due to the school's Superintendent being out-of-town.

According to the district secretary, Superintendent Larry Wood was out of town on Thursday, and for a very good reason.

Wood's son was graduating from pharmacy school.

Because of this milestone event, Wood requested the board re-schedule its meeting to be held two days earlier, on Tuesday.

The board approved his request.

The next regular session board of education meeting is scheduled to be held on July 17 in the library at the high school campus.
