Reinforcing its public commitment to help people gain basic literacy skills, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently announced that it has awarded Migrant Whole Health Outreach (MWHO) of Kennett with a $15,000 grant to further the non-profit community organization's literacy and basic education outreach efforts.

"The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is excited by the work Migrant Whole Health Outreach is doing and their positive impact on the community," said Dollar General CEO Rick Dreiling. "We are proud to help our neighbors take a major step toward improving their quality of life by supporting Migrant Whole Health Outreach's literacy initiatives."

For a significant amount of time, MWHO has impacted the lives of migrants and other residents in Dunklin County through a number of community-minded programs and other positive initiatives including the English as a Second Language (ESL) educational program, diabetes awareness classes, environmental campaigns, and citizenship preparation courses.

Because of its dedication to improving the community and increasing local educational efforts, Migrant Whole Health Outreach was an ideal candidate for the Dollar General grant.

Since the Dollar General Literacy Foundation's inception in 1993, it has improved the functional literacy of adults by providing grants to nonprofit organizations such as MWHO, who are dedicated to the advancement of literacy.

The Foundation has awarded more than $24.5 million in grants across its 35-state market area.

The grants provide program support to nonprofit efforts to reach low-level literacy adults and their families.

Any organization promoting adult basic education, GED preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), family literacy and workforce literacy would be applicable and have the potential to benefit from such grants.

In addition to cash grants, Dollar General's in-store Learn to Read brochures have offered free literacy referrals to more than 50,000 people.

In order to have received the grant, representatives from MWHO would have submitted a grant proposal detailing why they should be named the recipient of the recent award.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation accepts proposals on an annual basis. The Foundation will begin soliciting 2009 proposals online on January 5, 2009.

Proposals must be submitted by March 6, 2009.

For more information on the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, or to have your name placed on a mailing list for future requests for proposals, send your non-profit organization's name, a contact name and mailing address to The Dollar General Literacy Foundation, P.O. Box 1064, Goodlettsville, TN 37072-1064.
