Approximately $17,000 worth of stolen equipment has been returned to the Kennett Country Club, thanks to the efforts of investigators with the city's police department.

According to Detective-Lieutenant Tim Trowbridge of the Kennett Police Department (KPD), the Criminal Investigations Division of the KPD recently completed an investigation of four counts of burglary, dating back to March 2008.

Trowbridge said that on Friday, May 23, officers responded to a burglary alarm at the Kennett Country Club where three unsolved burglaries had occurred over the last couple of months.

Upon arrival at the country club, officers apprehended Orbon Connie Duke, 54, of Kennett, who was initially charged with one count of burglary in the second degree, a class C felony charge.

Through continued investigation, on Monday, May 27, investigators conducted a search of Duke's home on Blair Street where they located several items previously stolen from the golfing society's maintenance shed, including several high-dollar tools, yard equipment, and clothing.

According to Trowbridge, after making the discovery, investigators were later able to obtain confessions of the previous three burglaries and acquired the location of the majority of the stolen property.

To retrieve the property, officers had to travel to several locations around the Dunklin and Pemiscot County areas.

Approximately $17,000 worth of equipment was retrieved and returned to the rightful owners.

Trowbridge indicated that all reports and affidavits regarding the crimes have been filed with the Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for consideration.

The Kennett Police Department is also asking individuals in the community that may have additional information to contact the Criminal Investigations Unit at (573) 888-4196.

Duke is being represented by public defender Brice Joseph Donnelly who requested on May 27 that his client's $25,000 bond amount be reduced. However, Donnelly's motion was denied by Dunklin County Circuit Court Judge John C. Spielman.

Duke is being held at the Dunklin County Justice Center and is to appear in court at 9 a.m., June 6.

Hopefully he will have to do some time for this one, instead of getting off for ratting out everyone else.

They need to punish him with some hard labor instead of just locking him up. He has been stealing his whole life and he is never going to change.

I can't see why if someone breaks the law, they can squeal on someone else and get off or if they can hire an expensive lawyer even with evidence they get off. Sure the police need help but to make a deal and spend little or no time isn't sending a very good message to young people or anyone. What happened to the old saying "if you can't do the time, then don't do the crime". If you BREAK THE LAW, THEN TAKE THE PUNISHMENT!! Stop making deals and think of the victim's right for a change, we have to work to get what we get, make them work to repay, the victim, the system for time spent and for the lawyer, STOP giving the criminal all the rights!!!

This guy is a HABITUAL offender. He has been in and out of prison his whole life for the same offense, (stealing). He hasn't changed any at all. Why can't our justice system put Orbon away for good? He's a thief and always will be a thief. No person's property is safe while he's out of prison. One other question. Why aren't the people, that had the stolen property at their homes, charged as accessories? Isn't there a law against receiving stolen property and knowing it was stolen? The people that had the stolen property had to know it was stolen if Orbon Duke was in possession of it. Newsflash! Might want to ask Orbon what he did with all the missing outboard motors from the bootheel area too! I know a couple guys from Senath would like to know where theirs are. Stealing must run in the family because, one of his relatives stole my new trampoline a few years back. We finally tracked it down and were fortunate enough to get it back. I bet his RAP sheet has enough paper in it, to wall paper the outside of the new Justice center.

Lock this guy up and throw away the key, he's a HABITUAL criminal and doesn't deserve to be in regular society.
