Melva Jean Garrett Brank passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of May 24, 2008, after a courageous 2 1/2 year battle against cancer.
Melva was born in Gobler, Mo., Dec. 7, 1942, to the late Ray and Lemith Garrett. She was raised in Kennett and graduated from Kennett High School in 1960.
In 1964 she married the late Gerald Paul Patton, Sr., and, after living in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland and Virginia, they settled in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969. Gerald and Melva divorced in 1977. In 1981 Melva married the late Charles H, Brank, who passed away in 1992.
Melva dedicated her entire career to the service of her community beginning as a nurse at Dunklin Memorial Hospital in Kennett, as a military wife and mother during wartime, then in hospital and medical office administration at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville for 20 years, then as a grief counselor at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home in Jacksonville for five years. Melva returned to Kennett briefly to help care for her mother until her death in 2005.
Melva is survived by her first son, Gerald Paul Patton, Jr., and his wife, Maria Del Carmen Cruz Patton, of Jacksonville; her second son, Kevin Ray Patton and her grandson by Kevin, Evin Michael Patton, of Jacksonville; two brothers, Gail and Gary Garrett, both of Kennett and two sisters, Pat Tippen, of Kennett and Donna Spencer, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett with the Rev. Glenn Hurst officiating. Burial follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family will appreciate either flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society or Hospice on behalf of Melva C. Brank.
