Born Aug. 2, 1918, at Clarkton, he was the son of the late Dickey Rice and Arthur Van Rice Sr. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Clarkton, was a member of the Kiwanis Club, and a Clarkton Civic Leader. He had worked as a teacher with the Malden School District and as a rural mail carrier.
On Aug. 9, 1944, he was married to Iris Fern Douglass at Piggott, Ark., who preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 2005.
Two sisters, Mary E. Rice and Martha Ann Staples, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, Douglass Rice and wife, Lauren, of Van Buren, Mo.; one daughter, Susan Rice of Springfield, Mo.; one granddaughter, Kim Butler and husband, Richard, of Little Elm, Texas; one grandson, Dr. Keith Rice of Dallas, Texas; one great-grandson, Will Butler of Little Elm, Texas; and one great-granddaughter, Teagan Rice of Dallas, Texas.
There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery at Bloomfield, Mo. with the Rev. Susan Marner-Sides officiating.
The family suggests donations be made to the charity of one's choice.
Bradshaw Funeral Home at Malden, Mo. is in charge of services.
