A "Meet the Candidates" forum is set to take place in Dunklin County, allowing voters to see and hear from local Democratic candidates vying for office positions and several state level candidates who are also seeking office.

According to Brenda Dicus, President of Democratic Women's Club of Dunklin County, and Jim Pemberton, Chairman of Democratic Central Committee of Dunklin County, volunteers are preparing for the upcoming forum which is slated to take place at 7 p.m., Monday, May 19 at the Holcomb Community Center.

Those individuals who have indicated they will be involved in the forum, according to Dicus, include Mark Powell, candidate for Missouri State Treasurer; Margaret Donnelly, Missouri State Attorney General; Sam Page, Missouri State Lt. Governor; Joe Allen, candidate for the 8th Congressional District of Missouri; John Hagler, representing Jay Nixon for Governor; Shane Stoelting, candidate for State Senate; Tom Todd, 163rd District Representative; Terry Swinger, 162nd Representative; and Steve Hodges, 161st Representative.

Local candidates will include Jack Adkins, Coroner; Shawnee Trowbridge, Public Administrator; Bob Holder, Sheriff; Jeannie Herbst, 1st District Commissioner; Brenda Dicus, Assessor and Karen Vandiver vying for Assessor, Patrick McHaney, Commissioner, 2nd District; Scott Tutor and Bill Anderson vying for 2nd District Commissioner, and Karen Rasberry and Scott Anderson both vying for Collector/Treasurer.

Each candidate will be given an allotted time limit to list their qualifications and after the meeting will be mingling with the crowd for questions and/or comments.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Soft drinks and snacks will be served.

Nice try Wbkelly. I do appreciate the fact that you are correct on your facts. The problem is that the Bootheel only votes Republican on the national level. There has not been a true Republican (we had Bob Holder) elected since statehood on the local level. The only place that I can find such narrow minded people is inner city ST. Louis. The only other place in the state that people are moving out of by the droves. Even though I appreciate the argument that you make wbkelly, even you say that the period of growth that you are referring to is due to government pay checks. The Bootheel was and still is sucking the government teet. I don't point to the socialist programs of FDR and Harry Truman as points of pride. I won't be satisified until the people of the Bootheel can stand on their own without government intervention. But that will take major projects, like making Hwy. 25 four lane or making another major lake or other draw in the area. In Missouri, the Democrats are a minority. So how will Tom Todd or Terry Swinger help in the minority? At least they're Democrat heh?

Even if the Bootheel had been Democratic since 1821, "Democratic" wouldn't have the same meaning throughout that time. At the time of the Civil War, Republican Abraham Lincoln was against expanding slavery and eventually against slavery itself; the Democrats in the Bootheel majority were pro-slavery and tried to secede. But today, Democrats are the party of equal rights.

Besides, it was under Democrat FDR and some of his successors--including Missouri's own Democrat, Truman--that the Bootheel experienced economic progress. And for the last 35 years or so, the Bootheel has been decidedly Republican, after the religious right and former Dixiecrats swelled Republican ranks. So the GOP gets to take some of the "blame" for the Bootheel's low scores.

I want to submit my comments here first. I'm sure they'll be removed but I believe they are fair. Two candidates mentioned above ran as Republicans first. Did they have a change of heart, or are they political opportunists? Question two, Dr. Sam Page, and his Dr. wife, I wonder if they will be driving their Mercedes or their Jag from their million dollar home in St. Louis and explain in order to explain the wonders that the Democratic Party has done for the Bootheel. Since 1821, the Bootheel has been entirely Democratic and it is now the region of the state with the lowest incomes, highest infant mortality, lowest college education percentage in the state. GREAT JOB GUYS! Well, that's my two cents before my post gets yanked for speaking the truth.
