La Monte Elementary School Principal Elizabeth Wilkerson in just her second year in the job is already being recognized by her peers.

Wilkerson was named New Principal of the Year for the central region by the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals, and was honored at the group's conference at Osage Beach in March.

"I've just started doing all this. I've won teacher awards, but not as principal," she said.

The award is given to 13 second- or third-year principals across the state.

Before coming to La Monte, Wilkerson was a teacher and coach in Kennett, in southeastern Missouri.

"I interviewed, liked the job, and accepted it, landed up here," Wilkerson said.

She is listed in "Who's Who Among American Teachers" and was nominated for the 2006 Wal-Mart Teacher awards.

Wilkerson pointed to her involvement in the principals' organization and the Reading First grant awarded to the school as factors in her selection.

La Monte superintendent Joan Twidwell is proud of Wilkerson's achievement.

"It's nice, it's always nice when we can highlight positive things that are going on in the district. We're very proud of her," she said.

Twidwell said Wilkerson has been instrumental in helping revise the school's curriculum, and works well with teachers.

"She is very visible in the classrooms," Twidwell said.

La Monte tends to get principals beginning their careers.

"Because of our size, we typically attract people that are looking to get into administration," she said.

This is the first time the organization has given the award, said Twidwell.

"I was very happy for her [Wilkerson]. She's obviously well thought of by her peers and colleagues, and very active in the various organizations," she said.

I'm sorry. But not everyone living in Kennett is a Kennett native. Shouldn't the author have considered that those of us not Kennett natives might not know anything at all about the principal or her family. Wouldn't it have been a simple thing to tell us of her connection to Kennett. Even the comments do not add to informing the reader of this person's connection to Kennett or even where La Monte is. Should we just believe that because "nearly everyone spanning 60 years had her dad for a teacher," the reader who only arrived her say 5 to 20 years ago should know the answer to these questions?

As an ex-Kennett native for twenty years, now living in Jonesboro, AR, I enjoy reading this paper since I have family still living in Kennett. Since I have been away for so long, it does help when the paper puts "reminders" in it about the "younger" generation and who they are related to in town. I went to KHS in the seventies and remember the coach, and I also remember a Wilkerson girl, but just because I knew those two does not mean I know or have heard about any others and it also does not mean that all Wilkersons are related to the Coach/science teacher that was there when I went to school. Jay-N-Jonesboro and Sun4shine could have just been nice and said who her parents are and noted that La Monte is approximately 76 miles east of Kansas City, MO. To br549: www.switchboard.com might help you in times when looking for a town and can also give you a map with directions when traveling (this is where I looked for the location of La Monte).

Who in Kennett doesn't know who she is? Nearly everyone spanning 60 years has had her dad for a teacher.

I'm confused. Does the author really want the reader to be confused? What connection to Kennett does Ms. Wilkerson have? Where is La Monte? Wouldn't this information be helpful to the reader?
