Tribe golfers wrap up undefeated regular season

Thursday, April 24, 2008
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The Kennett Indians may not have had their best day on the golf course, but it was good enough for the Tribe to finish undefeated in dual and triangular matches.

Ryan Richardson and Randy Crawford each shot 44 as Kennett finished with a score of 180, enough to outdistance both Doniphan (194) and Saxony Lutheran (195) Wednesday at Dalhousie Golf Course.

The Indians head into Monday's district meet with a record of 17-0.

"It's really, really exciting," Kennett coach Ken Garland said. "I think it's the first time one of my teams has went undefeated. It's also a great feeling because we have so many young players.

"All of them on the varsity will be back except one. We're really going to miss Johnathan Rogers but we'll have everyone else back."

Rogers and Sean Callawaert both carded 46s while Ben Collins shot a 48.

Kennett will face its toughest test of the season Monday in districts at Farmington.

"We're going to have some competition with Dexter, Notre Dame and maybe Sikeston," said Garland. "We've beaten Sikeston twice but they'll still be pretty tough."

At New Madrid, the Lady Tribe was no-hit by freshman hurler Kelly Robey, but turned a pair of errors and some passed balls into three runs to stay undefeated.

"We put the ball in play and we were able to capitalize on their mistakes," Kennett coach Laurie Vaughan said. "But I also have to give credit to our girls for being aggressive on the basepaths again, putting themselves in a position to score. ... This is one of those games where we were glad we were able to come away with a win. It was a hard-fought game."

The Lady Indians (5-0) stole eight bases Wednesday after stealing 14 Monday at Hayti. Kalee Gore, Brittany McNew and Jody Vancil each stole a pair to lead the way on the basepaths.

Laurel Scales and Haley Morrow combined for 11 strikeouts in the two-hit shutout, with Scales pitching four innings of hitless relief for the win.

Cooter 10, Risco 3

At Risco, the top-seeded Wildcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but needed three runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away and make today's championship game.

Cooter (12-2) had six home runs, led by a three-homer, 4-for-4 performance by Aaron McCaig. Seth Childers, Charles Copeland and Evan House also added round trippers.

Justin Earnhardt, Zach Williams and Jeff Walker all had two hits each for Risco (7-5).

Campbell 9, Holcomb 5
In Wednesday's other semifinal, the second-seeded Camels scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to get some needed insurance and make the finals.

Zack Jackson was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a double to pace Campbell (8-3), while Cale Weeks was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a two-run homer and winning pitcher Jake Tinnon was 2-for-2.

Corbin Clark was 3-for-4 to pace the Hornets, while Jeremy Nevill was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the second inning.

Tinnon pitched a complete game to pick up the win for Campbell, striking out nine and walking just two while scattering eight hits.
