Choosing and preparing foods that are low in sugar, fat, and sodium can be a real challenge for people of all walks of life with diabetes, but it is an obstacle that can be overcome.

The University of Missouri Extension is offering a series of classes for Hispanic people with diabetes and their families and friends to help address these daily issues.

"Eat Well, Be Well with Diabetes" is an updated Hispanic version of the extension's "Dining with Diabetes" series.

The series consists of three classes designed to teach people with diabetes about healthy food choices and meal planning.

The emphasis of the program is on healthy versions of familiar foods that are easy to prepare, and cooking techniques that use new or more healthful ingredients. The new version of the existing program also stresses the importance of physical activity, diabetes self-management, and working with a health care team to manage diabetes.

According to program coordinators, classes are sponsored by the Migrant Whole Health Outreach (MWHO) of Kennett and the Dunklin County University Extension and will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on three consecutive Wednesdays which include May 7, 14, and 21, 2008 at the MWHO office.

An interpreter will be available at each session.

To register, individuals should contact the MWHO Office at (573) 888-9044.

Although everyone who could benefit from such a program is encouraged to come and participate, the series of classes are not intended to provide individualized meal plans for participants nor are they meant to replace the diabetes education that is provided by qualified health professionals.

Instead, the classes are designed to help people with diabetes learn how to make better food choices.
