Man sentenced for possession

Wednesday, April 2, 2008
A Kennett man who was charged in connection with an incident that occurred in June 2007 was sentenced by New Madrid County Circuit Court Judge Fred Copeland to 15 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections and an additional year in the New Madrid County Jail for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and resisting arrest.

According to Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney, Stephen P. Sokoloff, Joe Lemons, 48, was apprehended in the summer on a city failure to appear warrant, after fleeing from officers.

Once apprehended, officers located several rocks of crack cocaine in Lemons' possession.

The case was sent to New Madrid, with the state being represented by Sokoloff and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Dunklin County, Jonce B. Chidister.

Lemons was represented by Charles Hirth of the Public Defenders Office.

The two charges Lemons was convicted of during his trial included a class B felony count for the drugs found in his possession with intent to sell, and a class A misdemeanor charge for resisting arrest by the Kennett Police Department.
