Hornersville Cemetery Association seeking help

Friday, March 21, 2008

HORNERSVILLE, Mo. -- The Hornersville Cemetery Association is seeking your help. Everyone is invited to the annual fundraising event, an all-you-can-eat catfish dinner.

Today, Friday, March 21, 2008, volunteers will be serving up a feast, including all-you-can-eat catfish, hushpuppies, french fries, cole slaw, pickles and onions, brown beans, and your choice of desserts.

Pam Fouts, who is heading the fundraiser, is also the overseer of the cemeteries for which the event is held to raise funds for, for their maintenance.

"We have four cemeteries that require yearly upkeep," Fouts said. "We rely solely on donations and fundraisers like our fish fries."

The Cemetery Association maintains the upkeep of the Horner Cemetery, the Hornersville Cemetery, the Edmonston Cemetery and the Brannum Cemetery.

"Although three of the cemeteries are rarely used anymore, they still must be kept up for those who are laid to rest there," Fouts said. "We can't pretend they don't exist."

One of the oldest cemeteries, the Brannum Cemetery, fell prey recently to juvenile vandals. Although police could not release the names of the perpetrators because of their age, it was confirmed that some restitution is being sought.

Fouts also could not discuss any details regarding those responsible for the vandalism, but she did say that she felt things were being properly handled.

"These cemeteries are the final resting places of our family members, ancestors and friends," Fouts said, "so we've got to do the best we can with what we've got to see that they are taken care of, so when relatives or friends want to visit the grave of a loved one, they can do so with a little more ease."

The dinner will be held from 4 p.m. till 7 p.m., tonight, at the Hornersville Community Center. The cost is $7.50 for adults and $5 for children.

"We hope that everyone tuns out and helps us," Fouts said, "it's a way we can still give a little to those who have left us."

Many of the descendants of these people buried here are dispersed throughout the USA and the world. So many passed through here and have deep connections with our ancestors buried here. Have you thought about expanding your appeal to more distant regions through ancestry.com or myfamily.com or rootsweb? Personally, I will send this appeal to my myfamily.com family members and see if it expands. I will also send in a donation myself.

Thank you,

Richard Ellis
