During its recent city council meeting Mayor Richard Mara advised the council that the city is still accepting bids for repairs at the city airport, as well as the paving of several city streets.
"We are needing to get some bids on paving repairs at the airport, as well as some streets we have here in town that are in very bad condition," Mara said.
"We were able to leave the street department funds alone for a solid year now," Mara said, "therefore we have accumulated approximately $23,000 in street department revenue, which should be enough to repair a couple of our worst streets," he said.
Mara and the council discussed which streets should be priority and which streets would have to wait until next year when the revenue was built back up.
Streets included in the council's conversation included George, Edmonston and Mulberry streets. "If we could pave the first 345-feet of George St., that would cover the worst of it," Mara said, "and that would leave us with enough to get to Edmonston St. which is in extremely poor condition as well."
Mara said the city will continue excepting bids and will discuss the issue further at the councils meeting next month.
City Clerk Penny McLarty advised the council it was time to review and discuss renewing the city's hail insurance contract. After discussing the variety of crops farmed on the city's land at the airport, the council elected to take out hail insurance on the cotton and to have McLarty check into insurance on the corn and grain crops.
Mara advised the council that the city would be holding a public hearing at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2008, to hear from its Grant Writer Mitzi Dell, who will discuss the available Community Development Block Grant for developments for the community building.
Other items of business included:
* Setting date for Spring Clean-up, which was scheduled for Wednesday, April 30. Mara announced there will be only one day this year due to the high fuel costs.
* Approving the purchase of new American flags to hang during appropriate holiday seasons at $590, which includes the flags, poles and brackets.
* Opening bids for mowing of the city's property. After opening the two bids, one submitted by Jim Blackburn in the amount of $64, and the other in the amount of $60, submitted by Tommy Burgess, the council elected to award the bid to Burgess, who had the lowest of the two bids.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, April 21, 2008, at the Hornersville community center.
