Gladys L. James, 90, of Hayti, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at her residence.
Born April 28, 1917, in Manila, Ark., daughter of the late John William Merriman and Mary Lee Lingo Rhodes, she was a homemaker, a clerk at Moore's Dollar Store, and a senior companion for VNA. She attended Calvary Baptist Church.
On July 10, 1937, in Steele, Mo., she married Richard E. James, who preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 1970. She was also preceded in death by one son, Timmy E. James; one daughter, Terri Jean Malone; four brothers; one sister and one grandson, Jonathon Merriman Kennedy.
Survivors include five children, Charles James and wife, Margie, of Dyersburg, Tenn., Rebecca Jernigan, of Savannah, Tenn., Mary Ann Hartsell and husband, Larry, of Kennett; Alice Effner, of Summerville, S.C., and Dottie Kennedy and husband, David, of Houston, Texas; one brother, Guy Rhodes, of Alta Loma, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Eddie James, Lori Finley, Jeff and Steve Jernigan, Bryan Hartsell, Anna Adair, Jamie Smith, Mikey Effner, Erin Brothers and Rhnea Grady and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at the John W. German Funeral Home Chapel in Hayti with Bro. Doug Wahls officiating.
Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Hayti.
Pallbearers were Eddie James, Bryan Hartsell, Jeff Jernigan, Mikey Effner, Matt Smith, John Adair, Geoff Brothers and Chip Finley.
