Pizza delivery ends in police chase

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

What began as a normal night's pizza delivery ended in the theft of the delivery vehicle, a police chase, and an automobile crash that sent the car thief and an innocent bystander to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, Tenn.

On Sunday night Jerry Snipes, delivery driver for Pizza Hut in Kennett, was sent to the local Super 8 Motel to drop off a pizza when his car was stolen.

According to Snipes' report to Kennett police officer Aaron Waynick, he delivered a pizza to a room located on the second floor of the Motel before returning to the parking lot only to find that his silver 1999 Ford Taurus, bearing registration C7xp, was gone.

Snipes told officer Waynick that before leaving the car to make the delivery he had taken his keys from the ignition and laid them between the console and the drivers seat.

Snipes also told the officer that he left his cell phone in the vehicle.

A short time later, following Snipes report to KPD, officer Waynick received information from the Dunklin County Sheriff's Department that the vehicle in question had been involved in a crash just South of Malden, Mo., while being pursued by Clarkton police.

According to a crash report by the Missouri Highway Patrol, the driver of the stolen vehicle, Antuan L. Madison, 31, of St. Louis, Mo., was traveling North on US 62, one mile south of Malden, in what patrolmen Sgt. R. M. Walker and Sgt. Dennis W. Rainey reported as a 2000 Ford Taurus, while being pursued by Clarkton police when he crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head-on.

The vehicle that was struck by the stolen car was a 1995 Ford Ranger driven by Chase D. Winder, 17, of Malden.

Winder and Madison were taken to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, Tenn., by Air Evac as a result of the crash. Both were listed as suffering serious injuries.

The stolen vehicle was towed back to Kennett by Lowry's Wrecker Service. Winder's vehicle was towed to Malden by Dixie Auto.

Charges have yet to be filed in connection with the incident.

Please don't give me the "Don't let a good boy go bad" junk by saying that the entire incident was the Pizza Hut driver's fault by leaving his keys in the car.

The blame for the incident falls upon the criminal who decided to break the law by stealing a car.

The way I see it, Antuan Madison was the one totally at fault because if he hadn't been able to steal Aaron Waynick's vehicle, he'd simply stolen another.

I hope the young man that was delivering the pizza's learned something about this. Cause it could have been stopped before it even happened. Buy taking his keys. I hope the 17 yr old boy over comes this.

Prayers to Chase and his family. How horrible that a child is seriously injuried while following the laws.

That's why you don't leave your keys in the car.
