The news story I am reading pictures three of the Democratic presidential candidates at the top. Why did it not present pictures of all eight of the Democratic candidates I wonder? Might it be because that news organization has already determined that one of the three they pictured is bound to win the Democratic nomination?
Have you ever read about or heard of the effort put into the physical appearance of a person who is about to appear on camera, on television? The makeup is often extensive.
Nevertheless, these candidates, Republican ones too, can't wait to appear on television. They want their faces plastered all over the news, in a positive light of course.
CNN really played up the debate because its own Wolf Blitzer moderated the "event." Before the debate, they billed it as perhaps the most important one to this point.
I am curious that these candidates are so interested in how they look on television. Of course, that is all most of us will see of them and there actually are people who vote for a candidate based solely upon the way he/she looks!
In the coming weeks, Hillary Clinton is sure to continue seeking redemption after her poor performance at the debate previous to the Las Vegas one. New Mexico's Bill Richardson will talk about his fifth nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Obama will perhaps continue trying to get us to believe he really thinks Michael Mukasey's lack of understanding about "waterboarding" is "appalling." Who knows what we can look for from the other Democratic and Republican presidential hopefuls.
In times like these, I wish everyone would take to heart the words of a former president. Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, "I can think of nothing more boring for the American people than to have to sit in their living rooms for a whole half hour looking at my face on their television screens."
Appropriately put, Mr. President!
