I do not remember the years Torre managed the St. Louis Cardinals. I do remember thinking at the time that he appeared to have his hands tied regarding the team, however. Perhaps that perception was wrong but it was the one I had at the time.
I think my perceptions proved to be true after the New York Yankees hired him as their manager and he almost immediately had success managing what appears to be one of the most difficult situations in baseball -- working for George Steinbrenner.
Now Torre is going to Los Angeles to manage that team. Torre is the winningest manager in postseason history. Wonder how that makes the people who let him leave St. Louis feel?
Torre took the Yankees to four World Series as their manager. His team made the playoffs each season he managed them. Not a bad record!
I have never been a Yankee fan. I have never been a Dodger fan. I have always been a Torre fan and will continue to be.
Since Tommy Lasorda left the Dodgers, they have a dismal postseason record. No doubt Torre will turn that around given a little bit of time.
With his record, Torre is destined to the Hall of Fame. The Dodgers are destined to win again. Good luck, Joe!
