Library to recognize 11 in Hall of Honor ceremony

The Dunklin County Library will honor 11 county residents and former residents during a special ceremony at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 21. The ceremony will be the Fifth Annual induction into the Dunklin County Hall of Honor.

To have been considered for induction into the Hall of Honor, individuals must be or have been citizens of Dunklin County and have distinguished themselves within their occupation, trade, or field of endeavor, through intellectual, creative, humanitarian and professional accomplishments.

“The honorees have strong ties to the communities all over the county and are being publicly recognized for their outstanding personal achievement and contributions to the growth and development of Dunklin County,” said Jonell Minton, director of the Dunklin County Library.

Individually displaying exceptional and unique accomplishments, the 11 honorees to be enshrined in the Hall of Honor include, Terrell (T.R.) Baker, Chester Moses Burcham, Ben Cash, Charles B. James, Dr. Jimmie L. Marler, Dr. Paul C. Miltenberger, Jim D. Morris, Donald J. Parker, Charles R. Richardson, Sr., Elden S. Selves, and Dr. Milton Tate.

According to Minton, those being honored were nominated by individuals and reviewed by a Hall of Honor Committee which recommended the 11 individuals be inducted.

“All of the men and women inducted into the Dunklin County Hall of Honor have worked hard to achieve the success they found in their lives and deserve to be recognized,” Minton added.

“They truly have helped to make Dunklin County a great place to live in.”

Since it’s inception in 2003, the Dunklin County committee has inducted 95 individuals into the hall of honor. This year’s honorees will increase the total to 106.

In 2003, 42 honorees were inducted into the Hall of Honor. Those enshrined included George Alford, Sol Astrachan, Gov. Carl E. Bailey, Charles B. Baker, Dr. Paul Baldwin, Charles Edward Barnes, Allen Black, Elise Kochtitzky Byrd, Edward “Buddy” Casinger, Sheryl Crow, Mike Crum, Gov. John M. Dalton, Billie DeMint, Jr., Thomas Gerald Douglas, John Downing, Albert Narvel Felts, Adolph O. Goldsmith, Armon Harrison, Glenn Lee “Hezzie” Highfill, John A. Howell, Pete James, Congressman Paul C. Jones, Joe Keene, Mary Wade Kochtitzky, Rev. Dr. H.L. McClanahan, Gene McDonald, Honorable Flake L. McHaney, Hall McHaney, Powell B. McHaney, Lloyd Miller, Josie Aileene Donaldson Mobley, Wallace Montgomery, Rev. Monsignor Frederick F. Peters, Major William Ray, Veryl Riddle, Dr. Bill W. Stacy, Sally Stapleton, Jack Stapleton, Jr., Terry Turlington, Leonard Younger and Congressman Orville Zimmerman.

In 2004, 31 honorees were inducted. Those individuals honored included Dr. Lewis E. Aukes, Colonel Elmo Clinnard Baker, William D. Ballinger, the late Norman Bartmess, Christine Martin Landess Beall, the late Honorable William Howard Billings, Pat Burlison, the late Thomas J. Crunk, John David (J.D.) Faulkner, the late Benjamin Franklin (Dubb) Ford, the late George Paul Harris, the late Elizabeth Heath Russell Hemphill, the late Joseph Arthur Hemphill, R. Don Higginbotham, Kenneth Rhodes Masterson, Robert Edward Merrick, the late Charles Lavelle Mitchell, the late John L. Petty, Calvin Douglas Phelps, Ricky Lee Phelps, William F. (Buck) Provance, the late Chancie L. (Mr. Rudy) Pylant, the late Arthur Van Rice Sr., the late Lyle Richmond, the late Adolphus McHaney Riggs, the late Lonzo Hicks Shepard, the late Eugenia Proffer Stewart, Glennray Tutor, the late Ophelia Richardson Wade, Jack Waller, and the late Joseph C. Welman.

The following year, in 2005, Jack Astrachan, Charles H. Baker, Bill Brigance, Rosemary and Dr. James Russell Burcham, Jr., Van Hawkins, Barry McFarland, Phillip Santie, Colonel Paul William Seabaugh, J.C. Skaggs, state Senator Nelson B. Tinnin and Glenn Wilcoxson made up the 12 enshrined into the Hall of Honor.

In 2006, the 10 honorees included William Terrell Branch, M.D., Larry L. Brewer, Charles Meredith Cable, Bill Hampton, Charolyn (Bid) Miles, Byron Keith Mitchell, R. K. (Kimball) Swindle, Larry J. Thomason, and Bill and Joyce Walsh.
