More quotes I came across this past week included that one, which I thought was cute. Others are more serious.
When I read that first one, however, I thought of what Jesus said, "Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows," (Luke 12:6-8 NIV).
Then I read something Joseph Stalin said. Notice the marked difference between what Stalin said and what Jesus said. Stalin said, "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." Contrast that to what Jesus said, quoted above. Wonder how soon after his own death Stalin changed his mind? I have a sneaky suspicion that all those deaths Stalin was responsible for became something more than stats!
Abraham Lincoln said, "It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues." I like that too!
Lincoln's quote reminds me, for some reason, of something else Jesus said. He said, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone . . .," (John 8:7).
I have never been an Oprah Winfrey fan, but I do like something she has said: "The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work."
Other interesting quotes I read about work include,
"Do not hire a man who does your work for money, but him who does it for love of it," Henri-Frederic Amiel;
"When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt," Henry David Thoreau;
"Life grants nothing to us mortals without hard work," Henry J. Kaiser;
"People forget how fast you did a job -- but they remember how well you did it," Horace;
"In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it; they must not do too much of it; and they must have a sense of success in it," John Ruskin.
