Sara Z. Dunagan Sowell, 81, of Jackson, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at her residence.
She was born in Yorkville, Tenn., she was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Caruthersville, Mo., and the Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson and served on the Executive Council of the Cotton Boll Girl Scout District in Southeast Missouri. She established the Horace and Sara Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking at UT Martin, and was named the 2006 recipient of the Chancellor's Award at UT Martin.
She married Horace Dunagan, Jr., who preceded her in death in 1987, and she later married J.E. Sowell, who survives.
Survivors also include one son, Nick Dunagan and wife, Cathy, of Martin, Tenn.; two daughters, Nancy Biggs and husband, Mike, of Greenfield, Tenn., and Anita Roy and husband, Robert, of Jackson; one brother, Bob Zarecor, of Yorkville; 10 grandchildren, Stan, Casey and Cody Dunagan, Tracy VanderMeeden, Brad, Jake and David Biggs, Ryan, Adam and Sara Nan Roy and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the First Presbyterian Church in Caruthersville with the Rev. Dr. Paul Currie and the Rev. Dr. Kirwin Stewart officiating.
Burial was in the Little Prairie Cemetery at Caruthersville.
Pallbearers were Stan, and Cody Dunagan, Jake, David and Brad Biggs, Ryan and Adam Roy and Brett VanderMeeden.
H.S. Smith Funeral Home in Caruthersville was in charge of arrangements.
