Lady Indians sweep Piggott; Mules kick Tribe in soccer

The Kennett Lady Indians tennis team closed out its 2006 regular season with a bang, sweeping the Piggott Lady Mohawks, 9-0, at Kennett High School Monday afternoon.

In other area sports, Kennett's soccer team fell to Poplar Bluff, 8-0, while in area volleyball, Gideon defeated Southland, Holcomb downed South Pemiscot 25-16, 25-14 and Campbell outlasted Delta C-7 23-25, 25-17, 26-24.

At KHS, the Lady Indians (7-3) tuned up for Thursday's Class 1, District 2 Tournament at Sikeston by turning in perhaps their most dominating performance of the year.

Hanna Lack, Susan Shetley and Christy Doughten all recorded shutout wins in singles play, while the doubles team of Christina Dewrock and Megan Walker won its doubles match, 8-0.

In junior varsity play, Samantha Geary recorded a 6-0 win in the lone match.

Varsity

Kennett 9, Piggott, Ark. 0

Singles

No. 1 Christina Dewrock won 8-3.

No. 2 Samantha Brown won 8-5.

No. 3 Brook Burcham won 8-1.

No. 4 Hanna Lack won 8-0.

No. 5 Susan Shetley won 8-0.

No. 6 Christy Doughten won 8-0.

Doubles

No. 1 Burcham-Shetley won 8-1.

No. 2 Lack-Doughten won 8-3.

No. 3 Dewrock-Megan Walker won 8-0.

Soccer

Poplar Bluff 8, Kennett 0

At Indian Park, the Indians fell to a strong Poplar Bluff Mules squad for the second time this season and are now 0-9-1.

"Bluff is just a very good team, a very strong team," Kennett coach Rick Bell said. "We couldn't move the ball very well on them the first half at all."

Poplar Bluff recorded a 5-3 win in the jayvee match.

Volleyball

Holcomb def. South Pemiscot

At Steele, the Lady Hornets raced out to a 19-3 first-set lead and cruised from there, improving to 13-5-3 on the season.

South Pemiscot won the jayvee contest 25-16, 25-10.

Campbell def. Delta C-7

At Deering, the Lady Chargers fell to 5-8 on the season and 4-4 in the Tri-County Conference after dropping a three-set battle to the Lady Camels despite strong games from Lindsey Bryant and Candace Braswell.

Campbell also took the jayvee game 25-20, 25-17.
