Larry graduated from the Alton High School, and at the age of 18, enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in WW II from 1944-1946. After his discharge from the service, instead of attending college, Larry decided to pursue his dream of owning his own retail store. With very little money and no real skills, he wasn't sure how he could accomplish this, but in 1949 he was able to purchase his first grocery and feed store in Alton. In 1955 Kelly Owens joined the business and Wallace and Owens Stores began.
Larry was baptized in November 1960 and united with the Alton Freewill Baptist Church, becoming ordained as a deacon in 1967. He enjoyed singing and at times leading the church choir.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Newman and Martha Hodges Wallace, three sisters and four brothers.
Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Alton Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Trantham officiating. Singing will be provided by the church choir, led by Leroy Chronister and accompanied by Kathleen Crigler.
