Helen Neil Childress Smith, 81, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., formerly of Hayti and Caruthersville, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at her residence.
Born June 27, 1925, in Gibson County, Tenn., daughter of the late Claude and Lena Childress, she attended Braggadocio High School and graduated from Yorkville High School in Tennessee and worked at a Chevrolet dealership, flower shop, and worked as a hotel events coordinator. She was a member of the Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church, SEMO Club, the Thursday Bridge Marathon Group and the Tuesday Evening Bridge Marathon Group.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd H. Smith; two children, Joe Neil VanCleve, of Germantown, Tenn., and Kim Gracelyn Swartz, of Cape Girardeau; one step-daughter, Janice Russell, of Livonia, Mich.; three sisters, Claudine Bishop and Rebecca Pinion, both of Caruthersville and Corrine Still, of Wynnburg, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Joe Neil VanCleve, Jr., of Memphis, Tenn., Robert Kevin Barbour, Jr., of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Mary Kathryn Bertrand, of St. Louis, Mo., and Matthew Field VanCleve, of Germantown; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, William M. Childress.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., today, Friday, Aug. 4, in the Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church Sanctuary at Caruthersville.
Burial was in the Little Prairie Cemetery at Caruthersville.
