Born Jan. 10, 1921, in England, Ark., son of the late Clarence and Aretha Hill Ashford, he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in WWII, was employed at City Cash Market, Crow's Super Market, Bruce's Big Star, First Presbyterian Church and owned and operated Ashford's Used Furniture in Caruthersville. He was a member of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Caruthersville.
In 1951, he married Louella McKinney, who survives.
Survivors also include one son, Tay C. Ashford, Jr., and wife, Diana, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three daughters, Carolyn Johnson, of Blytheville, Ark., Delores Huling and Judy Jacob and husband, John, all of Dallas, Texas and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Johnny, Milton and Willis Henry Ashford.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 29, at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Caruthersville with the Rev. Jay T. Spicer officiating.
Burial with full military honors was in the Morgan Ridge Cemetery at Caruthersville.
Pallbearers were James Douglas George III, Artagus C. Ashford, Herman C. Versey III, Robert McKillion, Jr., Doyle Wayne Carter and John Jacob.
John W. German Funeral Home of Hayti was in charge of arrangements.
