Born Oct. 3, 1929, in Brinkley, Ark., son of the late Aubrey Vene, Sr., and Mina Burgess Tarpley, he attended Caruthersville School, and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was employed at the Caruthersville Shipyard, a code enforcement officer for the city of Caruthersville, a firefighter, member of the V.F.W. and a member of the Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church.
He was married to Ida Watkins. On Feb. 15, 1983, he married Vivian Geraldine Grooms, who preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 1996.
Survivors include two sons, Audie Tarpley and wife, Karen, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Scott Tarpley and wife, Jennifer, of Dyersburg, Tenn.; two step-children, Thana K. Hollowell and Jeffrey Tarpley, both of Caruthersville; one brother, Eugene Tarpley and wife, Marie, of Caruthersville; five grandchildren, Justin, Matt, Zachary, A.J., and Adam Tarpley; and step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, at the H.S. Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Caruthersville with the Rev. Dwight Chapman officiating.
Burial was in the Maple Cemetery at Caruthersville.
Pallbearers were Charlie Jones, Louie Mansfield, and grandchildren.
