Powell

Virgil Leon Powell, 88, of Malden, Mo., died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Beverly Health and Rehab at Malden.

Born July 28, 1917, at Peoria, Ill., son of the late Lee and Clara Armstrong Powell, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in WWII, a member of the Four Mile Masonic Lodge, past member of the Malden Board of Public Works, Malden Lions Club Citizen of the Year, retired from Powell Supply and a member of First United Methodist Church of Malden.

On October 8, 1938, at Caruthersville, Mo., he married Nell D. Downing, who survives.

Survivors also include one son, Sam Powell, of Malden; one sister, Francis Thompson, of Memphis, Tenn.; one grandson, Sam Powell, of Dexter, Mo., and three great-grandchildren, Andy and Caroline Goessling, and Emma Powell, all of Dexter.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence Powell and one granddaughter, Lisa Goessling.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 10, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel in Malden with the Rev. Bob McNabb officiating.

Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery at Malden.
