Born Jan. 26, 1919, in Messler, Mo., daughter of the late Jessie and Annie Crow Surface, she attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Campbell.
On Aug. 28, 1937, in Poplar Bluff, she married Veaurl Lewis "Windy" Summers, who preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1997. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Alma Jean Summer; two sisters, Dorothy Wheately and Leona Baker and two brothers, Edward and Herschel Surface.
Survivors include one daughter, Kay Lipsey, of Qulin; two sons, J.L. Summers and wife, Arlene, of Salem, Mo., and Jerry Summers and wife, Nezi, of Campbell; two sisters, Jewel Berger, of Qulin and Ida Bell Balzell, of O'Fallon, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Phipps, of St. Louis, Mo., Wendy McCardie, of Troy, Mo., John Lewis Summers, Jr., of Elsberry, Mo., Billie Jean Coffell, of O'Fallon, Stephanie Gutterman, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Timothy Lipsey, of Springfield, Mo., and Jessica Perkins, of Hartsville, S.C., and nine great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Zachary Hohl, both of St. Louis, Austin, Curtis and Phillip McCardie, all of Troy, Mallorie Coffell, of O'Fallon and Tyler, Ethan and Ali Gutterman, all of Poplar Bluff.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 7, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Campbell with the Rev. Tony Wood officiating.
Burial was in the Carola Cemetery at Qulin.
