Born Sept. 21, 1928, in Campbell, Mo., son of the late Roy and Lottie Ponder Koontz, he was attended Campbell School and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War, a Missouri State Highway patrolman, and worked for the Federal Transportation Department. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, a pilot and a member of the Church of God in Caruthersville.
On Feb. 28, 1962, in the Concord Community, he married Wanda Lee Danley, who survives.
Survivors also include four children, Phillip Johnson, of Kansas City, Mo., Garnetta Johnson, of Fayetteville, N.C., Twila Russ, of Little Rock, Ark., and Robert Koontz Jr., of Caruthersville; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at the Church of God in Caruthersville with Dr. Elzie Danley and the Rev. Kevin Wade officiating.
Burial was in the Maple Cemetery at Caruthersville.
Pallbearers were Joe Rich, Dewey Coomer, Brian Hendrickson, Robert G. Koontz Jr., George Russ and Phillip Johnson.
H.S. Smith Funeral Home of Caruthersville was in charge of arrangements.
