Born Oct. 5, 1933 in Hickman, Ky., son of the late Peter and Agnes McMillan Gunnels, he was a veteran of the Korean War and received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was employed at Noranda Aluminum, Inc. and was a member of the Temple Baptist Church.
On Sept. 28, 1956, in Corinth, Miss., he married Louise Townsend, who survives.
Survivors also include four sons, Larry and Dale Gunnels and Brian Gunnels and wife, Tonya, all of Caruthersville and Jimmy Gunnels and wife, Gina, of Mountain Grove, Mo.; one sister, Norma Bare, of Louisiana; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters; one half-brother and his stepfather.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Temple Baptist Church in Caruthersville with Brian Gunnels and the Rev. Jim Pilcher officiating.
Burial with full military honors was held in the Pemiscot Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Caruthersville.
Pallbearers were Charles Dildine, Aaron Gunnels, Charley Oatsvall, Brian and Jerry Pendergrass and Billy Rittenberry.
Honorary pallbearers were Billy Griffin, Eldon and Franklin Hedge and James Mott.
John W. German Funeral Home of Hayti was in charge of arrangements.
