High school seniors receive Lemonds scholarships

Friday, August 12, 2005
There are numerous scholarships awarded to graduating seniors throughout out the area. Most of these awards are well publicized.

There is, however, a scholarship available to high school seniors for nearly two decades that has received little fanfare.

This is the Homer and Dolah Lemonds Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was established in 1986 to honor Homer and Dolah Lemonds for their faithful service to churches and associational work in the Black River Baptist Association.

Since then 95 scholarships have been awarded to qualifying high school graduates. Eight of the $1,000 scholarships were awarded this year to graduating seniors.

The recipients for the 2005-2006 school year were Benjamin Buchanan of the First Baptist Church at Campbell; K.C. Jansson and Abbey Smith of First Baptist Church at Kennett; Aaron Cole and Amanda Shelton of First Southern Baptist Church at Malden; Samantha Dunivan and Leslie Holloway of First Baptist Church at Senath and Kimberly Rickman of Varner River Baptist Church near Kennett.

Scholarship award recipients must meet certain criteria including being a member of a Baptist Church in the Black Rover Baptist Association, maintain superior grades throughout their high school career, participate in church and school activities, demonstrate leadership qualities and exhibit a financial need.

The scholarship was established by Ron and Christine Lemonds who remain primary contributors. The contribute the first $500 and then match every dollar given to the scholarship fund. None of the money goes for expenses, every dollar is used for the scholarships.

There is additional funding provided by several churches in the Black River Baptist Association, as well as the Lemonds Reunion Association, several family members and some businesses.

Churches contributing to the fund are Stanfield Baptist, Ely Baptist, Shady Grove Baptist, First Baptist at Kennett, Friendship Baptist, Third Street Baptist, Varner River Baptist and Faith Baptist at Senath.
